  Wedding reading:

There are two quite different questions that have occupied our minds since the dawn of time.

Mankind has asked itself: Why are we here? And down the ages, astronomists, geologists and physicists have tried to theorise an explanation.

Mankind asks itself: What is love? And down the ages, writers and poets, artists and musicians have all tried to furnish a description.

Who of us can deny that the issue of our origin has not risen to the top of our thoughts on some clear starry night only to be driven away by the hurly burly of life?

And from the time we become old enough to begin to recognise the stirrings of the deepest emotion we can feel, do we not try to understand why this one specific person makes our hearts sing?

The reason for our existence and the definition of love are the two most central themes of life, and questions we must each answer for ourselves.

Could it be that the two questions have the same answer? Does life exist because our purpose is love?

Why are we here - today? You and I are here this day to witness the public expression of love between two people.

We are here to celebrate, encourage and support Adam and Emily as they take this step in life’s journey. By being here we make our commitment to fostering and sustaining them in their lives together from this day forward.

And when in the years and years to come one of you may look at the other and ask: Why am I here? Then cast your mind back to this very day, when before the question was even formed, you spoke the answer.

Poetry:

Fingerprints

My daughter brought a poster home

from kindy the other day.

It was rolled up like a scroll;

she said:  "It's for Mother's Day."

She handed it to me and off

she skipped to run and play.

I slowly rolled it out and looked

at what her gift might say.

The corners were a bit dogeared

the edges looking tattered

But my daughter had made it

That's all that really mattered.

Her simple poem offered me

a memory, with a smile:

"A final little fingerprint

from when I was a child."

Her tiny fingerprints were

fingerpainted on the page -

the same ones which she leaves around

our home at every age

Her little fingerprints are over

all my life, my heart;

and she'll still be leaving them

when she makes her own start.

The fingerprints she has left

are copies of my own;

and she too will leave her prints

on the seeds she's sown.

The cycle will continue

and the fingerprints be made

and the memories of Mother's Day

will wax and wane and fade.

SYNERGY

We are two, and yet

we are one

We are often apart, and yet

we are always together

We are a mating of

two souls into a

consummation of one spirit

We are entwined as the

cords of our lives

weave together

We are two minds, and yet

we are one understanding

We are two, and yet

we are one

SUMMON THE LIGHT

The night chases day

as the day succeeds night

Both are a part of

the way we have life

The shadows of midnight

seem far from the morn

Yet earth spins again

to bring you the dawn

The advent each day

is a lighting of love

A shadowless noon

while the sun stands above

The season of time

is balanced in days

The wheel of the world

gives each season its sway

The equinox comes

the sphere to re-turn

The solstice will share

what each one of us learns

So when the sun shines

forget not the night

And when the dark holds

summon the light
